Encouraging performances continue!!

The weather may be cold, but the MTR athletes' performances have been anything but. Recently, at the Lysterfield 7 hour MTB event, MTR's Jason Quigley and Rod Stormonth endured the elements to come away with encouraging results. The wet and muddy conditions were no hindrance for Quigley, pedaling out a fantastic 3rd place overall finish, with an 8 lap, 7 hour 27 minute performance. Stormonth also put in a commendable 7 lap, 6 hour 48 minute ride for 3rd place in his category. Whilst not surprising to others in the MTR crew, results may have raised eyebrows as both riders failed to stay up right and crashed during the 7 hour marathon. Both riders were happy with their result, although there is bigger fish to fry with Quigley and Stormonth both in heavy preparation for an upcoming 24 hour MTB event.

Meanwhile in sunny Queensland, 26 degree perfect weather greeted Ben Robinson, Carla Lawson and Xavier Coppock as they took part in the Yeppoon half Ironman triathlon. Robinson endured a 5 hour performance, made all the more impressive after losing his nutrition on the notoriously rough course. In the female 30-34 age group, Carla Lawson put in an encouraging 4th place, 5 hour 8 minute performance in preparation for her second attempt at the Kona, Hawaiian Ironman. However all these performances were overshadowed by a more than encouraging start to the season for Xavier Coppock. The 4 hour 27 minute effort was a personal best on this course and was good enough for 23rd overall and 2nd in his age group. A promising sign as he seeks to achieve his ultimate goal of qualifying for Kona.
We look forward to more promising future results.

MTR racing. Beautiful one day, perfect the next.

Rod braves the Storm and takes the win!!

Both Jason & Rod made the journey to Ballarat to compete in the InterWinter Series Round 2, a 3 hour enduro in terrible conditions due to the weather.

Rod, in his first season of MTB racing, braved the terrible conditions (and had to borrow an undershirt - source confidential- to assist in staying warm) to win his category in what was a tough day of racing for all athletes. By the looks of the weather and conditions a finish was a victory itself, however to pull of a "W" was an outstanding achievement in what looks like could a be a successful season for both riders.

What made this performance even more impressive, was Rod, who also races at Footscray Cycling Club, competed in the club championships the previous day and was very unlucky not to have 2 wins in 2 days. Unfortunately for Rod, who made a break with 20kms to go was caught with the final 200m in the sprint for the line to finish 5th in the 100k race.

Jason, who has had a solid start to his season, is looking to peak for the World Titles later in the year managed a very strong 12th in his category. By the condition of the bikes at the conclusion of the day, both boys will need lots of TLC to get the steads back to working order.

Another week of Great Results

Over the last week 4 athletes competed in various events around Victoria.

Travis & Archie competed in the Williamstown 1/2 Marathon, with both athletes recording very solid times so early in the season.

Travis completed the 21.1kms in 1hr 21min 17sec placing him 7th overall in the race. Archie ran a super 1hr 27mins 37sec to record 32nd overall and an outstanding 2nd in his age group.

Both athletes are starting preparation for their first Ironman attempt at Busselton in December.

Jason competed in a 5hour enduro over the same weekend and finished an outstanding 4th overall and also in his age group. This is just the start of the long haul that Jason has leading into the World 24hour Championships later in the year.

Rod started his first 6hr enduro on his brand new MTB and had the misfortune of destroying his rear wheel just under 2hours into his race. At the time he was leading his age group and was looking for a positive result. Only upwards from here for Rod.

Keep returning to see weekly updates from the team.

A Great Day had by MTR-Racing

4 of the MTR-Racing Athletes Teamed up for a duathlon at Lysterfield Park covering a 3.5k run, 20k off road MTB ride and then a 6k run.

Both teams were eagerly anticipating the outcome due to Benny & Rod confident of pushing the more fancied team of Jason & Xavier.

The day had chilly start to the morning, although by race time the weather was perfect for such a race. With over 100 starters and 12 teams entered, it was a quality field.

The first run over the 3.5k's including a steep hill climb, however this did not affect seasoned runners like Luke Whitmore (Another Team Degani Athlete) who covered the first run in 11.45mins to take the lead into T1. Ben was entered T1 in 13.20min closely followed by Xavier in 13.32mins.

So onto the bike, both Rod & Jason heading out of transition in close proximity, the race was going to be close.

Unfortunately for Rod, he had a minor fall which cost him some considerable time and was never able to bridge the gap to Jason or the other team riders heading back to transition.

Jason, took control of the MTB leg and closed the gap on the teams in front to head back into transition in 3rd overall and 1st team. His time was 53.07min (4th overall). He handed over a 30sec lead to Xavier for the final 6k run.

Rod, after recovering from his fall, managed a 59.14min ride and handed the reigns over to Ben.

So, onto the final 6km run, 5km which was flat and included a 1km climb. With Xavier being in 3rd position outright and only just in front of the 2nd placed team, the pressure was on to see if the run training was going to pay dividends.

By posting the 9th fastest run time of the day in 22.55min, Xavier held off all rivals to cross the line in 3rd outright and 1st Team.

Ben posted a very solid time on 23.25mins and only just finished off the podium by less than 25seconds.

Results can be found here: http://www.trixseries.com/ Under the results section

It was an outstanding effort by all involved and the team environment was very pleasing to see. Ben & Rod have already challenged Jason & Xavier to a re-match at the next race.

Well done to both Teams.

Stay tuned for more updates as a few of the Athletes are running the Williamstown 1/2 Marathon this weekend. We look forward to more good results.

Jason & Xavier collect the winners cheque.

A Quick update!!

Well, with the Triathlon season well and truly done for the year, most of the MTR-Racing team are training for the upcoming season commencing in August.

Firstly, MTR-Racing would like to welcome 2 new athletes on board, Ben Robinson and Justin Schweikert. Both have completed Ironman Triathlons in very respectable times and MTR-Racing look forward to working with the 2 new athletes and seeing rapid improvements along the way.

In the previous update, it was noted the Jason Quigley, MTR's resident Mountain Biker competed in the Australian Mountain Bike Championships. Well now Jason has completed his race report and you can see that here www.jasonquigley.blogspot.com

Jason finished an incredible top 50th overall in a race that included 3000metres of climbing. Great Work Jason. You can follow his progress by looking at the above link.

Jason is also racing the World 24hour MTB Championships later in the year.

Other News for the Year is that 5 MTR Athletes will be competing in the Western Australian Ironman. Carla Lawson will be backing up from her race at Hawaii, both Ben Robinson and Xavier Coppock will be starting for the 3rd consecutive year and will both be looking for improvements from great races last year.

Archie Ball and Travis Atkins will both be making their Ironman debuts at the race and by the form showed in early season racing, should be there for a great showing.

Also, Rod Stormonth, who is making the transition in the a Mountain Bike Racer is going to race the 24 hour MTB race later in the year also.

A long winter ahead for all 7 athletes.

In short term news, 4 athletes will be competing in a Mountain Bike Duathlon at the weekend with Ben & Rod teaming up along with Jason & Xavier. Both teams will provide a good showing for the sponsor TEAM DEGANI and MTR-Racing are looking forward to some positive results.

Stay tuned for the race report.

Jason starts his season this weekend....

MTR-Athlete and resident Moutain Biker, Jason Quigley commences his season this weekend with the Australian Moutain Bike race at Avoca, central Victoria.

It has been a long preparation for Jason and look forward to a successful weekend for him.

Reece Treloar, is heading to Coleraine next weekend to have another crack at the Tour of Coleraine. Both boys will be rasing the flag high and we look forward to solid results from both.

Carla grabs slot for 2010 Ironman World Championships

Carla Lawson continues her great from over the Triathlon season to earn herself another crack at the Ironman World Champioships.

After having limited preparation, Carla managed 5th place in the 30-34 age group. Carla's highlight was her ride which set up her race and consolidated her position at the pointy end of the field.

Other MTR-racing athlete Xavier Coppock, who was also trying to gain a slot at Kona, did not have his ideal race, and managed to cross the line at the same time as Carla.

Stay tuned for race reports.

Another successful weekend for MTR-Racing

Reece Treloar, in his first race for the season produced a solid race at Footscray to take out the "B" grade race. By taking out this victory, Reece joins Xavier & Rod, who in his first "A" Grade race finished with the peleton in "A" Grade.

From early in the season where MTR had no "A" grade cyclist, to now have 3 out of the 10 athletes in the team is a very solid performance.

Jason Quigley, also started his season on the weekend with a 6 hour enduro, managed 6th overall after completing a massive Saturday effort in preparation for more important races later in the season.

We look forward to race reports from these two athletes soon.

The rest of the MTR Team have been working together to assist Ironman NZ entrants Xavier Coppock & Carla Lawson. With assistance from Archie, Travis & Jason, both athletes are in good condition for solid performances.

Rod Stormonth takes out club championships

Rod Stormonth has continued his great form on the bike in the criterium season at Footscray Cycling Club taking out the "B" grade Club Championships.

Not only is this a great result by the non sprinter, but the fact that he broke away very early in the hour long race and managed to lap the entire field bar one makes this victory even more impressive.

Rod then managed to drop the only other rider int he race to take out a very impressive victory. This win follows up some very strong performances and now joins fellow MTR athlete Xavier Coppock in "A" Grade.

In other races that MTR athletes competed in on the weekend was the Geelong 70.3 race.

Stand out performer on the day was Carla Lawson, who finished 5th in her age after riding her way into the race with a 2hr 29min ride. Carla is 3 weeks away from Ironman New Zealand and looks in good form for that race.

Other Athletes to race were 1st timer Travis Atkins who, remarkably in his first 1/2 Ironman smashed out a 4hr 23min before due to a technical issue was DQ after the race. After trying to clarify what the issue was, the Race Referee decided not to overturn the decision even thou there were a lot of gray areas.

Archie Ball also performed outstandingly, knocking off 30min from his previous PB. Since joining MTR-Racing, Archie has gone from strength to strength and soon we will see the veteran of the team break 5 hours in a half ironman. Archie also just missed a top 10 finish coming 11th in has age group.

Marcus Coppock, who completed the ride leg in a team, contributed a solid 2 hr 30min to set up a good result for his team.

In upcoming races, Jason Quigley, steps out onto the race circuit for the first time this year to compete in a 6 hour enduro over the weekend. We look forward to continued success on the 3rd discipline of MTR - Mountain Biking.

Great results keep flowing in!!

Good Results just keep flowing in

Another good week of results for MTR-Racing with Travis Atkins being the standout for the week.

Travis finished 9th overall in the Western Suburbs Enduro on Tuesday with Travis finding great form heading into his first 70.3 race coming up. Travis' strength is his bike and with a very solid run, great results will keep flowing.

Other MTR-Racer was Archie Ball, who once again podiumed in his age group finishing 2nd. Archie is also going to race the 70.3 and has no reason not to perform at his best and finish the race with a PB.

On the crit circuit, MTR has some mixed results with newly promoted "A" Grade ride Xavier Coppock breaking a crank half way through his race, which meant a DNF.

In "B" Grade Rod Stormonth & Marcus Coppock both performed well with Rod doing most of the work again, this time reel in the breakaway. Unfortunately, both riders were spent once the sprint started and finished with the peleton.

The other rider Carla Lawson, competed solidly in her race with the volume of k's showing towards the end of the race and just missed the break for the sprint. This is a very encouraging sign due to being in large volume for New Zealand.

With Geelong 70.3 upcoming and some athletes competing in that, MTR will have a quite week on the track with only Rod Stormonth & Xavier Coppock the likely candidates for racing this week.

Reece Treloar is in heavy training will his season start not to far around the corner as is Chris Soanes who is due to head off overseas within the coming months.

Jason Quigley, also has some major races forthcoming and will get a summary from him over the next few days.

Stay tuned.

Stormy beaten by a storm!!

The only thing that MTR-Racing member, Rod Stormonth was beaten by was the weather. After setting up a handy breakaway in "B" grade, Rod Stormonth's lead was taken from underneath him by a stop in the race 35min in by rain. This enabled the peleton to have the restart at the same time. After being in good form the previous few races working for the team, this race was the perfect opportunity for Rod to take a leadership role and having Marcus Coppock help work for him.

After the restart, Rod was once again on the attack and once again was stopped by the weather and having the race cancelled.

Was a similar situation in "A" grade with Xavier Coppock holding onto the main peleton until the weather ended the race early. This is the second race for Xavier in the top grade and after just getting around in his first attempt, his race 2nd up looked more comfortable for him.

The other MTR-Racing member racing today, Carla Lawson, after suffering a mechanical Thursday night and being unable to finish, showed once again good form for her attempt to qualify for the Hawaiian Ironman at the upcoming New Zealand Ironman in 6 weeks time. Carla once again finished Top 10 overall and was once again first female across the line.

MTR-Racing athletes are becoming a good solid talking point at the crits with regular showings across all grades and also with the help of the main sponsor:

With more regular racing, and riders becoming fitter and stronger, all athletes will progress in no time.

First Win of season for MTR-Racing

Saturday's criterium involving three MTR-Racing members, Rod Stormonth, Marcus Coppock & Xavier Coppock controlled the "B" Grade race to ensure that Xavier could get into a break away early and stay away for the remainder of the race.

Whilst Xavier was in the break away, Rod & Marcus played the team role back in the peleton and helped control the pace so that the breakaway was never going to be caught.

Meanwhile in the breakaway, Xavier & two others continued to keep pressure on right up to the finish. The sprint saw Xavier take line honours and now most likely sees him move in "A" grade.

Below is the write up from the Footscray website:

Carrying on sizzling form from the National Ironman Series, 31 yo Point Cook resident Xavier Coppock blitzed the field to take a strong in in B-Grade's race today. Coppock, fresh from competing in Western Australia, made his intentions clear when he pressured the 32 riders in the bunch straight out of the box, causing quite a few riders to be unceremoniously dropped in the early stages of the race. Coppock, who has spent the last 12 months focusing on Ironman triathlons in preparation for the upcoming New Zealand race, then attacked again and was out on his own for quite a while, which was dangerous enough, but once he was joined by the powerhouse that is the big Darren Henneken and the wily and experienced Phil Tehan and Drew McDonald, the peleton did its best to work hard and bring back the break; but with two experienced time triallers in Coppock and Henneken riding at a tempo that no-one could match, it was "game over" for the chasers. Towards the end of the race, McDonald drifted back into the peleton, and in the mad rush into the final straight he and another rider crashed and both fell heavily; riders dodging left and right in an effort not to join the fallen. In the end, Coppock took the win, well clear of the valiant Tehan and Henneken, taking the strongest of possible wins.

It has been a strong start to the year for MTR-Racing, things are looking very positive for this new and exciting team.

Also, a few more announcements to be made in the upcoming weeks.

MTR-Racing announces new sponsor.

MTR-Racing would like to welcome on board Team Degani as the major sponsor for the year 2010.

MTR-Racing will be racing under the Degani Logo for this year as George from Degani Cafe & Bakeries has kindly joined the team.

Following this announcement 3 MTR-Racing members raced a Criterium at Footscray Cycling club. Xavier Coppock & Rod Stormonth were very active in the "B" Grade race and were unlucky to stick in a winning move with both athletes trying at every opportunity.

Carla Lawson, in her first criterium for many years saw her placed tied for 3rd and also tied for first female in "D" grade.

These three athletes along with Marcus Coppock, Reece Treloar & Chris Soanes will be regular place getters in the upcoming year for MTR-Racing, stay tuned.

Carla finishes 3rd in the Victorian Olympic Distance Championships

Although in heavy training for Ironman New Zealand, Carla still managed to peel off the fastest ride time in her age with a 1hr 4min ride for the 40k.

This set up her race and managed to still run a solid 10k to finish 3rd in the 30-34 age group category.

Carla's next race is the Geelong 70.3 Half Ironman, followed by New Zealand Ironman in March.

Other MTR-Racing athletes were Archie Ball, who placed a very creditable 7th in his age and Travis Atkins, who in his first Olympic Distance race, blasted out a 1 hour ride for the 40k. Travis also finished witha very competitive time of 2hr 10min. Both Athletes are heading to Geelong to compete in the 70.3 also, where MTR-Racing will have 4 Individual Ahletes and 1 Team competing.
